YEDC Begins Reconstruction of Collapsed 33kV Line Serving MAUTECH, Girei Communities

 

The Yola Electricity Distribution Company has commenced reconstruction of the collapsed 33kV electricity line serving Hayin Gada, Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Girei, and surrounding communities in Adamawa State, raising hopes of power restoration for customers affected by the disruption.

 

The electricity distribution company said a contractor has already mobilised to the affected site and begun fabricating components required to rebuild the collapsed structure.

 

YEDC disclosed the development in a statement issued by its Communications Officer, Blessing Tunoh, as residents and electricity consumers in the affected areas await the restoration of normal power supply.

 

According to the company, the damaged 33kV line was mounted on a 132kV structure before its collapse disrupted electricity supply to communities connected through the affected infrastructure.

 

The reconstruction is expected to involve the fabrication, installation and assembly of replacement tower components on the existing base.

 

YEDC said the contractor responsible for the work has commenced fabrication of the necessary components, marking a significant step towards rebuilding the structure and eventually restoring electricity to affected customers.

 

Contractor Mobilises to Site

 

Giving details of the repair process, YEDC explained that the required tower components must first be fabricated before they can be mounted and assembled on the existing foundation.

 

The company said it has made the necessary resources available to the contractor to facilitate the work and minimise the duration of the disruption.

 

Although YEDC did not announce a specific date for the restoration of supply, it said the contractor had given assurances that the reconstruction would be completed within the shortest possible time.

 

Completion of the structural work would clear a major obstacle towards restoring electricity supply to Hayin Gada, the university community in Girei and other areas dependent on the affected line.

 

The development is particularly significant because electricity disruptions affecting major distribution infrastructure can have consequences beyond residential customers.

 

Educational institutions, businesses, healthcare facilities, commercial operators and households increasingly depend on reliable electricity for daily activities, meaning prolonged outages can force consumers to rely on alternative sources of power at additional cost.

 

For an academic environment such as Modibbo Adama University, electricity is also essential to administrative services, laboratories, research activities, ICT infrastructure and other facilities supporting teaching and learning.

YEDC acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the disruption and appealed to affected customers to remain patient while reconstruction continues.

 

The company said it would provide regular updates on the progress of the work until reconstruction is completed and electricity supply is restored.

 

Keeping consumers informed could become particularly important if the reconstruction extends beyond initial expectations, as customers need accurate information to plan their activities during prolonged outages.

 

The company maintained that efforts were being made to ensure electricity was restored as quickly as circumstances permit.

 

Reconstructing collapsed electricity infrastructure, however, involves more than simply reconnecting conductors. Structural components must be fabricated and properly assembled, while the rebuilt installation must be safe enough to carry electricity infrastructure before the line can return to service.

 

The quality of the reconstruction will therefore be as important as the speed with which it is completed.

 

Communities Urged to Protect Power Infrastructure

 

Beyond the immediate reconstruction work, YEDC used the opportunity to renew its call for communities to protect electricity infrastructure from vandalism and other forms of interference.

 

The company urged residents to remain vigilant around distribution transformers and other electricity assets in their communities.

 

It also called on members of the public to report suspicious activities around electricity facilities to the nearest YEDC office or appropriate security authorities.

 

Vandalism of electricity infrastructure can create wider consequences for communities because damaged or stolen components may result in outages that affect large numbers of consumers.

 

Replacing such equipment can also require considerable resources and time, particularly where specialised components have to be sourced or fabricated before repairs can be completed.

 

YEDC therefore stressed that protecting electricity assets should involve cooperation between the company, security agencies and communities where the infrastructure is located.

 

According to the distribution company, collective vigilance would help safeguard electricity installations and contribute to more reliable supply after service is restored.

 

Outage Highlights Importance of Critical Infrastructure

 

The collapse of the line also underscores the importance of maintaining electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure capable of supporting growing communities and institutions.

 

Girei and adjoining areas form part of the expanding urban and institutional corridor around Yola, with residential settlements, businesses and educational facilities creating continued demand for electricity.

 

When a major line supplying such areas fails, the impact can quickly spread across economic and social activities.

 

Small businesses dependent on electricity may have to operate generators or other alternative energy sources. Households can face additional expenses for charging devices, preserving food and meeting other basic electricity needs.

 

For institutions, prolonged outages can also interfere with digital services and other electricity-dependent operations.

The company has appealed for patience during the repair period while assuring customers that resources have been provided to facilitate the project.

 

At the same time, YEDC’s warning against vandalism highlights a longer-term responsibility that extends beyond the current reconstruction.

 

Electricity infrastructure represents a critical community asset. Protecting transformers, towers, cables and other installations can help prevent avoidable outages and reduce the financial burden associated with replacing damaged equipment.
