Governor Commissions Major Security Assets to Boost Safety Across the State
The Sokoto State Government has reinforced its commitment to protecting lives and property with the commissioning of a significant fleet of operational vehicles, motorcycles, Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), and other advanced security equipment aimed at strengthening security operations across the state.
The security assets were unveiled during an official ceremony attended by top government officials, security chiefs and other stakeholders, marking another milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and improve the operational capacity of security agencies.
Speaking during the event, Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto described the investment as a strategic intervention designed to improve rapid response to security threats and enhance the effectiveness of security operations across all parts of the state. According to the governor, ensuring the safety of citizens remains the primary responsibility of government and one that his administration will continue to prioritise.
Among the newly commissioned assets are 62 operational vehicles, 320 motorcycles, Buffalo Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), and several other modern security equipment intended to improve surveillance, mobility, intelligence gathering and emergency response.
The governor explained that the equipment would be deployed to support security agencies in combating banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling and other criminal activities that have affected some communities within the state and the wider North-West region. He noted that improved mobility would enable security personnel to respond more swiftly to distress calls, patrol vulnerable areas more effectively and maintain a stronger presence in remote communities.
Governor Aliyu emphasised that investment in security infrastructure remains essential to sustaining peace, protecting economic activities and creating an environment where residents can live and conduct their businesses without fear.
He expressed appreciation to the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), for commissioning the security assets and for his continued support toward strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture. According to the governor, collaboration between the federal and state governments remains vital in addressing the complex security challenges confronting different parts of the country.
The governor also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the Federal Government’s support in improving national security and providing the necessary backing for ongoing security operations. He equally acknowledged the contributions of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, as well as the various security agencies whose dedication and sacrifices continue to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability.
According to Governor Aliyu, security cannot be achieved through equipment alone but requires sustained cooperation among government institutions, security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and residents. He called on citizens to continue providing useful information to security agencies while remaining law-abiding and supportive of efforts to combat crime.
The commissioning of the new security assets reflects the state’s broader strategy of investing in modern technology and operational resources capable of improving law enforcement efficiency. Analysts have consistently noted that adequate logistics and mobility remain critical components in successful security operations, particularly in areas with difficult terrain and dispersed rural communities.
In recent years, many state governments have increased investment in security support initiatives to complement the efforts of federal security agencies. Such interventions often include the procurement of patrol vehicles, communication gadgets, surveillance equipment, protective gear and operational logistics intended to enhance the capabilities of security personnel.
For Sokoto State, the latest acquisition represents another effort to strengthen the operational readiness of security agencies and improve their ability to respond to emerging threats. The inclusion of Buffalo APCs is expected to provide additional protection for security personnel operating in high-risk areas while enhancing operational effectiveness during special missions.
Governor Aliyu reaffirmed that his administration would continue to allocate resources toward improving security infrastructure, supporting security personnel and implementing policies that promote lasting peace across the state. He stressed that no meaningful development can take place without a secure environment, adding that economic growth, education, healthcare and social development all depend on the safety of communities.
He reiterated that the government remains committed to working closely with all relevant stakeholders to sustain the progress already recorded in the fight against insecurity. According to him, continuous investment in security, combined with intelligence sharing and community participation, will contribute significantly to maintaining peace and protecting the lives and livelihoods of residents.
As security challenges continue to evolve, the commissioning of the operational vehicles, motorcycles, APCs and advanced equipment demonstrates Sokoto State’s determination to strengthen institutional capacity and provide security agencies with the tools needed to effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities.
