ISWAP Suffers Heavy Losses as Operation HADIN KAI Foils Night Attack in Borno, Forensic Evidence Points to Foreign Terror Links
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a major infiltration attempt by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Cross Kauwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, killing several terrorists, recovering critical intelligence materials and uncovering fresh evidence suggesting the involvement of foreign terrorist facilitators in the failed operation.
The military operation, which took place late on Saturday, July 11, 2026, marks another significant blow to ISWAP’s operational capacity as Nigerian troops continue sustained offensives aimed at dismantling terrorist strongholds across the North-East.
According to military authorities, troops of the 19 Brigade, Sector 3, Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, demonstrated exceptional vigilance and combat readiness when they detected suspicious movements around their defensive position at approximately 10:20 p.m.
Rather than catching the troops off guard, the terrorists reportedly walked into a well-prepared defensive response.
Military sources disclosed that soldiers immediately engaged the attackers with coordinated and overwhelming firepower, forcing the insurgents into a chaotic retreat after suffering what officials described as heavy casualties.
The attempted assault was reportedly aimed at infiltrating the military location and looting medical supplies, particularly cholera treatment materials. Security officials believe this objective lends further credibility to recent intelligence reports suggesting that cholera has broken out within several ISWAP camps operating around the Lake Chad region.
The military noted that previous intelligence had already indicated that some infected members of the terrorist group had allegedly been executed by their own commanders in an effort to prevent the disease from spreading within their ranks.
The latest failed attack therefore appears to highlight the increasing logistical and medical challenges confronting the insurgent group as military operations continue to tighten around its operational bases.
One of the most significant developments from the encounter was the recovery of a Sony camcorder belonging to a terrorist media operative who was neutralised during the firefight.
Military authorities described the recovered equipment as an intelligence breakthrough capable of providing valuable insight into ISWAP’s operational planning, propaganda machinery and command structure.
Preliminary forensic analysis conducted on the recovered footage reportedly revealed sensitive operational recordings, including what investigators believe to be the final video made before the attempted assault.
According to the military, the footage indicates that the failed operation was coordinated by four senior ISWAP commanders, commonly referred to as Qai’ds, working alongside three foreign terrorist facilitators.
Among those identified is a Palestinian Arab known as Abu Ishaq, whom intelligence officials assess to be one of ISWAP’s principal military trainers.
Also identified was a Moroccan Arab known as Abu Thaiba, reportedly serving as a medical doctor within the terrorist network.
Investigators further disclosed that a third Arab operative featured in the recordings, although his identity has not yet been established.
The military stated that these findings strengthen existing intelligence assessments that ISWAP continues to receive foreign expertise, technical assistance and transnational support despite years of sustained counter-terrorism operations across the North-East.
Officials noted that while investigations remain ongoing, the preliminary forensic evidence points to continued international connections that may be contributing to the group’s resilience and operational capabilities.
Following the successful defence of Cross Kauwa, troops immediately launched exploitation and clearance operations across the surrounding area to assess the extent of the terrorists’ losses and recover abandoned materials.
Among the items recovered were additional rounds of PKT machine gun ammunition, 7.62mm Special ammunition, terrorist uniforms and other combat-related equipment believed to have been abandoned during the hurried withdrawal.
Military analysts also utilised post-engagement satellite imagery to monitor the terrorists’ escape routes.
According to the military, the imagery showed surviving insurgents evacuating the bodies of several fighters who were killed during the confrontation.
The satellite assessment was subsequently corroborated by credible human intelligence sources operating within the area.
These sources reportedly confirmed that numerous terrorists were killed while many others sustained serious gunshot wounds during the engagement.
The military, however, acknowledged that two Nigerian soldiers also sustained gunshot injuries during the fierce exchange of fire.
Both personnel were immediately evacuated by air to receive advanced medical treatment and are currently reported to be in stable condition.
Military authorities praised the professionalism and courage displayed by the troops, describing the successful defence as another indication of the growing effectiveness of Operation HADIN KAI’s ongoing counter-insurgency campaign.
Security experts have consistently observed that improved intelligence gathering, enhanced surveillance capabilities and increased coordination among security agencies have significantly reduced the ability of terrorist groups to execute complex attacks against military formations in recent months.
The latest engagement also comes amid intensified military operations targeting terrorist enclaves across Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, where troops have continued to conduct clearance missions, destroy logistics bases and disrupt supply routes used by insurgent groups.
Officials believe the failed Cross Kauwa infiltration represents another costly setback for ISWAP, particularly at a time when sustained military pressure has continued to weaken the group’s operational flexibility and morale.
The attempted attack also underscores the strategic importance of maintaining strong military presence in communities around the Lake Chad Basin, which have historically remained vulnerable to terrorist incursions due to their difficult terrain and proximity to insurgent hideouts.
Military authorities reaffirmed that Operation HADIN KAI remains committed to sustaining offensive operations until terrorist networks are completely dismantled and lasting peace is restored across Nigeria’s North-East.
They assured residents that troops would continue to maintain high levels of vigilance while protecting vulnerable communities, securing critical infrastructure and denying terrorists the freedom to regroup or launch fresh attacks.
As investigations into the recovered intelligence materials continue, security agencies are expected to further analyse the forensic evidence in order to identify additional collaborators, uncover operational networks and strengthen ongoing efforts to disrupt foreign support structures linked to terrorist activities in the region.
The latest victory adds to a growing list of successful military operations against terrorist groups and reinforces ongoing efforts by Nigerian security forces to restore stability across the North-East after years of insurgency.
