Nigerian Army, Police Pledge Stronger Partnership to Tackle Insecurity, Enhance National Security

ABUJA — The Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration as part of a broader strategy to confront Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, banditry and other forms of violent crime.

The renewed commitment was expressed during a courtesy visit by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Anietie Iniedo, to the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Onyechi Appolonia Anele, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

The high-level engagement underscored the determination of both institutions to deepen operational cooperation, improve intelligence sharing, strengthen strategic communication, and reinforce public confidence in Nigeria’s security architecture amid persistent security threats across different parts of the country.

Speaking during the meeting, Colonel Anele stressed that the increasingly complex nature of modern security challenges requires stronger coordination among the country’s security and intelligence agencies. According to her, no single institution can effectively address today’s multifaceted security threats in isolation, making collaboration a strategic necessity.

She explained that enhanced intelligence sharing, coordinated operations, institutional support and unified communication have become critical tools in responding to terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, banditry and other organised criminal activities threatening national stability.

Colonel Anele also congratulated CSP Iniedo on his recent appointment as the Force Public Relations Officer, expressing confidence that his leadership would further strengthen the long-standing relationship between the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force.

According to her, the Nigerian Army remains fully committed to building stronger partnerships with sister security agencies in line with the command philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), which prioritises transforming the Nigerian Army into a more professional, adaptive, combat-ready and resilient force capable of operating effectively within joint and multi-agency security frameworks.

She noted that the Army’s transformation agenda recognises the importance of collective action in addressing emerging security threats that cut across jurisdictions and operational mandates.

The Acting Director Army Public Relations further stated that sustained collaboration between the military and the police would improve the effectiveness of ongoing security operations across the country while creating a more coordinated response to criminal networks operating in different regions.

She maintained that stronger institutional partnerships would also enhance public trust in Nigeria’s security institutions by demonstrating a united commitment to safeguarding lives, protecting property and preserving national peace.

Security analysts have consistently argued that closer cooperation among security agencies remains one of the most effective strategies for addressing Nigeria’s diverse security challenges, particularly as criminal groups increasingly operate across state boundaries using sophisticated tactics.

Over the years, the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force have jointly participated in numerous security operations targeting insurgents, armed bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements across several parts of the country.

Joint operations involving both agencies have become increasingly common in areas affected by terrorism in the North-East, banditry in the North-West, violent crimes in the North-Central and other internal security challenges nationwide.

In his remarks during the visit, CSP Anietie Iniedo praised the Nigerian Army for its professionalism, dedication and sacrifices in defending the country against various security threats.

He acknowledged the significant contributions of military personnel serving in joint operations nationwide, noting that their commitment has played a vital role in improving internal security across Nigeria.

The Force Public Relations Officer said the existing partnership between the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force has continued to produce positive results in combating insecurity and maintaining law and order.

He called for even closer collaboration between the public relations departments of both institutions, stressing that effective communication has become an essential component of modern security operations.

According to him, coordinated public communication would help counter misinformation, fake news and deliberate disinformation capable of undermining security operations or eroding public confidence in security institutions.

He observed that criminal groups increasingly exploit misinformation and social media manipulation to spread fear, create confusion and weaken public trust, making strategic communication an important element of national security.

CSP Iniedo advocated for a unified communication strategy that presents accurate, timely and credible information to Nigerians while projecting a common national security narrative.

Such collaboration, he noted, would enable both agencies to better inform the public about ongoing security efforts, promote transparency and discourage the spread of false information capable of compromising operational effectiveness.

Observers say strategic communication has become increasingly important as security agencies face growing challenges in managing public perception during complex security operations.

The meeting also highlighted the Federal Government’s continued emphasis on strengthening cooperation among security institutions to improve operational efficiency and maximise available resources.

Nigeria’s current security landscape demands coordinated responses involving the military, police, intelligence agencies and other relevant institutions to effectively tackle increasingly interconnected threats.

The courtesy visit concluded with both organisations reaffirming their shared commitment to sustaining and expanding inter-agency cooperation in support of the Federal Government’s efforts to secure the country.

The engagement further demonstrated the mutual recognition that effective national security depends not only on operational capabilities but also on strong institutional relationships, seamless information sharing and coordinated strategic planning.

As Nigeria continues to confront multiple security challenges across various regions, the renewed partnership between the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force is expected to further strengthen ongoing operations, enhance public confidence and contribute to building a safer and more secure nation.

The renewed commitment also signals the determination of both institutions to remain united in confronting emerging threats while supporting national efforts aimed at preserving peace, protecting citizens and safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
