From Ghana’s Streets to a PhD: How Faith, Perseverance and Sacrifice Shaped Rikwense Muri’s Extraordinary Journey.
Success stories often highlight the moment of triumph, but they rarely reveal the years of sacrifice, loneliness, and unwavering determination that make such victories possible. For Dr. Rikwense Muri, earning a PhD was not simply an academic achievement—it was the culmination of decades of resilience, faith, and relentless hard work against overwhelming odds.
Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Dr. Muri shared a deeply personal account that has inspired many Nigerians, proving that difficult beginnings do not determine one’s destiny.
The journey began in the early 2000s when he was an undergraduate at Babcock University, studying as a self-sponsored student. While many of his classmates spent their long vacations resting or visiting family, he travelled to Odorkor, Accra, Ghana, where he worked tirelessly to earn enough money to pay his school fees.
Those vacations were never holidays for him. They were periods of intense labour, determination, and sacrifice. Every day spent working in Ghana was driven by one purpose to keep his education alive despite the financial challenges confronting him.
The demanding routine meant that his parents never had the opportunity to visit him during his university years. Education had become a personal battle, one he chose to fight with courage rather than complain about.
One of the darkest moments of his life came while he was in his second year at the university. During another working trip to Ghana, tragedy struck. His father passed away while he was away trying to earn money to continue his studies.
Unable to be present with his family during such a painful period, Dr. Muri described the experience as one of the most heartbreaking moments of his life. Yet even in grief, he remained committed to completing the dream that had demanded so much sacrifice.
According to him, his academic journey was often a lonely one. Some members of his own extended family doubted that he was genuinely enrolled in university because they rarely saw him. The disbelief continued until he eventually returned home wearing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform after graduation.
Rather than allowing criticism and doubt to discourage him, he drew strength from his faith.
“I believe in God, and I believe in myself that with God, I will survive and succeed,” he said.
That conviction became the foundation upon which he built every stage of his academic journey.
Determined to acquire an education capable of transforming both his own life and the lives of others, Dr. Muri refused to allow hardship, rejection, or delayed progress to define his future. Instead, he remained focused on his purpose despite the obstacles that repeatedly stood in his path.
Although his Master’s degree at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) was designed to last about two years, circumstances stretched the programme to five years before he eventually graduated in 2017.
What should ordinarily have taken three years eventually lasted eight years. The delay, he explained, was never a reflection of academic inability. Instead, it was the consequence of balancing the enormous responsibility of providing for his family while simultaneously pursuing the dream he believed God had placed in his heart.
Every setback strengthened his determination. Every delay deepened his patience. Every obstacle reinforced his faith that God’s timing would ultimately prevail.
By the grace of God, Dr. Rikwense Muri has successfully earned his PhD—a milestone that stands not only as a personal achievement but also as a powerful testimony of resilience, endurance, and unwavering faith.
Looking back, he believes his life demonstrates that delayed success should never be mistaken for failure.
His experience has taught him that hardship is temporary, delays are not denials, and lonely roads can still lead to extraordinary destinations.
As he embraces the next chapter of his life, Dr. Muri says he does so with gratitude, humility, and complete dependence on God, whom he describes as the Author of his story.
He remains convinced that the same God who sustained him through financial struggles, personal loss, academic delays, and seasons of uncertainty will continue to guide his future.
