Operation FANSAN YAMMA Foils Major Terrorist Attacks, Neutralises Notorious Commander in North-West Offensive

ABUJA, Nigeria — Troops of the Joint Task Force (North West) Operation FANSAN YAMMA have recorded significant operational successes in the ongoing campaign against terrorism and banditry across Nigeria’s North-West, successfully foiling multiple planned attacks, neutralising a notorious terrorist commander, recovering sophisticated weapons, and preventing what military authorities described as a large-scale assault on civilian communities in Zamfara and Katsina states.

The operations, conducted on Monday, July 7, 2026, formed part of sustained offensive efforts aimed at dismantling terrorist networks, disrupting planned attacks, and restoring security across some of the country’s most volatile regions.

According to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer of Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the coordinated operations involved both ground troops and the Air Component of the operation, demonstrating the military’s growing emphasis on intelligence-driven and joint-force operations.

Swift Response Prevents Attack on Zamfara Communities

One of the major breakthroughs occurred in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where troops of Sector 2 acted on credible intelligence indicating that terrorists were preparing coordinated attacks on vulnerable communities.

Military authorities said the troops rapidly mobilised alongside local security volunteers and intercepted the advancing terrorists before they could reach their intended targets.

The encounter resulted in a fierce exchange of gunfire during which the troops successfully repelled the attackers, forcing them to retreat into surrounding forests after suffering what the military described as significant casualties.

Although the exact number of casualties was not disclosed, the military stated that several terrorists were hit during the engagement.

The operation prevented what security officials believe could have resulted in extensive loss of lives and destruction of property.

Notorious Terrorist Commander Killed

In another operation within Zamfara State, troops responded to distress reports following an attack on farmers around Dogon Kade.

During the operation, soldiers engaged the terrorists and neutralised Alhaji Tukur, identified by military authorities as a notorious terrorist commander and the younger brother of wanted terrorist kingpin Alhaji Shehu Bagiwaye.

The military described the killing as a significant operational success, noting that Tukur had been linked to several criminal activities within the region.

Several other members of the terrorist group reportedly sustained gunshot wounds during the firefight but managed to flee into nearby forests.

Security analysts have repeatedly noted that eliminating senior field commanders often weakens terrorist command structures, disrupts operational planning, and limits their ability to coordinate future attacks.

Troops Disrupt Another Terror Plot

On the same day, troops launched another operation in Sabon Gari, also within Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, after receiving intelligence about renewed terrorist movements.

As security forces advanced towards the location, the terrorists reportedly abandoned their planned operation and fled into surrounding bushes.

Military personnel immediately carried out exploitation operations across the area, leading to the neutralisation of one fleeing terrorist.

Troops also recovered a motorcycle believed to have been used by the attackers during the aborted operation.

The military said continued pressure through rapid-response operations remains one of its key strategies for denying terrorists the freedom to organise and launch attacks.

Weapons Recovered in Katsina Operation

In neighbouring Katsina State, troops of Sector 2 conducting a fighting patrol encountered armed terrorists along the Danmusa–Yantumaki axis in Danmusa Local Government Area.

According to the military, the troops overwhelmed the terrorists during the encounter, compelling them to abandon their positions and flee.

Subsequent exploitation of the area resulted in the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, two magazines loaded with 25 rounds of ammunition, and one motorcycle believed to belong to the fleeing terrorists.

Military authorities described the recovered weapons as another setback for criminal elements operating within the North-West.

Security experts note that continuous recovery of weapons and logistics reduces the operational capacity of terrorist groups and limits their ability to conduct future attacks.

Air Force Foils Planned Large-Scale Assault

Perhaps the most dramatic operation of the day involved the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which successfully intercepted what the military described as a large convoy of terrorists travelling on motorcycles towards communities in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to the military, intelligence reports indicated that approximately 300 terrorists riding motorcycles were moving from the Sunke–Kumbo axis towards the Bayazaki riverine area, with the intention of launching coordinated attacks on innocent civilians.

Upon receiving the intelligence, three Nigerian Air Force platforms were immediately deployed to intercept the advancing convoy.

Military authorities said the terrorists attempted to evade detection after sighting the aircraft by taking cover beneath trees and within forested areas.

However, the aircraft successfully tracked their movements and carried out precision airstrikes against the fleeing terrorists.

The military said the strikes effectively neutralised numerous terrorists and prevented the planned attacks before they could be executed.

Although casualty figures were not immediately released, officials described the operation as one of the most significant air interdictions recorded under the ongoing military campaign.

Military Commends Air-Land Cooperation

The Joint Task Force praised the Nigerian Air Force for its swift response and effective coordination with ground forces.

According to military authorities, the successful air operation highlights the growing synergy between land and air components of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, allowing intelligence to be translated into immediate operational action.

Officials said this integrated approach has continued to degrade terrorist capabilities while improving the military’s ability to respond rapidly to emerging threats.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA Vows Sustained Offensive

Reaffirming its commitment to restoring peace across the North-West, the Joint Task Force said offensive operations against terrorists and criminal groups would continue across all operational sectors.

The military assured residents that troops remain committed to denying terrorists freedom of movement, protecting farming communities, securing major transportation routes, and safeguarding lives and property.

Authorities also encouraged residents to continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies, noting that several recent operational successes were made possible through timely information supplied by local communities.

As security operations intensify across Zamfara, Katsina, and other parts of the North-West, military authorities maintain that sustained collaboration between security forces, local communities, and intelligence agencies remains essential to dismantling terrorist networks and achieving lasting peace.

The latest operations underscore the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security across conflict-affected regions while disrupting the activities of armed groups that have continued to threaten rural communities, economic activities, and public safety in Nigeria’s North-West.
