Kefas Launches Youth Enterprise Fund, Injects Fresh N1 Billion to Expand Opportunities for Taraba Youths

Jalingo, Taraba State — Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has intensified his administration’s youth empowerment drive with the official launch of the Kefas Youth Enterprise Fund, a major intervention designed to provide young people with financial support, strengthen existing businesses and create new pathways to economic independence.

The initiative was formally unveiled on Thursday, August 20, 2026, in Jalingo, with more than 200 young beneficiaries receiving financial assistance to establish or expand their businesses. The first phase provides N500,000 to each beneficiary, giving participating youths access to capital at a time when limited financing remains one of the major barriers confronting young entrepreneurs.

The launch represents another significant step in the Taraba State Government’s broader strategy of moving youth empowerment beyond rhetoric and towards practical economic interventions.

According to Governor Kefas, the administration’s commitment to young people remains unwavering, with youth development positioned as a critical component of the state’s development agenda.

The governor emphasised that young people must be meaningfully engaged and given opportunities that allow them to develop their potential, build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the economic and social advancement of Taraba State.

N1 Billion Added to Enterprise Fund

One of the major announcements surrounding the programme is the injection of an additional N1 billion into the Youth Enterprise Fund to expand the initiative and accommodate more young people in subsequent phases.

The additional funding signals the administration’s intention to scale up the intervention rather than restrict it to the first group of beneficiaries.

The latest development also comes against the backdrop of increasing attention across Nigeria to youth entrepreneurship, access to finance and skills development. Federal youth programmes have similarly placed emphasis on enterprise creation, income generation and future-ready skills as important components of youth empowerment.

For Taraba, where a large youthful population represents both a major opportunity and a development challenge, expanding access to business capital could have broader implications if the funds translate into sustainable enterprises, employment and increased economic activity.

The state government is expected to use subsequent phases of the programme to reach more beneficiaries across different parts of Taraba.

Beyond Financial Support

While the financial component of the programme has attracted considerable attention, the Kefas administration is presenting the initiative as part of a wider youth development framework rather than a standalone cash intervention.

At the ceremony, the government unveiled the Taraba State Youth Development Roadmap, a strategic framework intended to provide direction for youth-focused policies and programmes across the state.

The roadmap is expected to serve as a guide for coordinating interventions around areas such as economic participation, skills development, entrepreneurship and opportunities for young people.

The development is significant because sustainable youth empowerment requires more than financial grants. Access to capital can help young entrepreneurs purchase equipment, expand inventory, improve services or establish new businesses, but long-term success also depends on skills, mentorship, market access, financial literacy and an enabling business environment.

The state’s decision to launch a broader roadmap alongside the enterprise fund therefore places the financial intervention within a larger policy framework.

‘Future Ready’ Guidebook Unveiled

Another highlight of the event was the unveiling of “Future Ready,” described as a practical guidebook designed to help young Tarabans develop relevant skills and improve their competitiveness in an increasingly globalised economy.

The focus on global competitiveness reflects the changing nature of employment and entrepreneurship, particularly as digital technology continues to reshape the way young people learn, work and conduct business.

Across Nigeria, youth-development initiatives are increasingly emphasising digital skills, entrepreneurship and pathways into emerging industries. The Federal Ministry of Youth Development, for instance, has described its programmes as part of an effort to connect young Nigerians with skills, jobs, entrepreneurship, credit and other opportunities.

For Taraba youths, the challenge will be converting the knowledge and opportunities provided through programmes such as “Future Ready” into practical economic outcomes.

Minister Olawande Attends Ceremony

The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, whose presence underscored the growing importance of collaboration between state and federal institutions in addressing youth unemployment, entrepreneurship and skills development.

Olawande has consistently advocated programmes that equip Nigerian youths with practical capabilities that can translate into employment, enterprise and economic independence. In a recent federal youth initiative, the minister highlighted the importance of creating an ecosystem that moves young people from skills acquisition towards enterprise creation and income generation.

His participation in the Taraba event therefore provided an opportunity to reinforce the message that youth development requires coordinated action at different levels of government.

From Grants to Sustainable Businesses

The real test of the Kefas Youth Enterprise Fund will ultimately extend beyond the launch ceremony.

The success of the programme will be measured by what happens after beneficiaries receive the funds.

If properly utilised and accompanied by effective monitoring, mentorship and business support, the N500,000 intervention could help young entrepreneurs purchase equipment, increase production, expand their customer base, employ additional workers and create businesses capable of surviving beyond the initial funding.

This is particularly important because youth empowerment programmes can only produce lasting economic impact when beneficiaries are able to build enterprises that generate continuing income.

The Taraba State Youth Development Agency has indicated that the programme is intended to put real economic opportunities in the hands of young people, with more than 200 beneficiaries participating in the first phase.

The agency has also called for additional interventions capable of expanding opportunities for young people, including initiatives that could strengthen youth participation in agriculture.

A Broader Vision for Taraba’s Youth

Governor Kefas’ latest intervention reflects an administration seeking to make youth development a visible component of its governance agenda.

With the Youth Enterprise Fund, the Youth Development Roadmap and the “Future Ready” guidebook unveiled within the same programme, the government is attempting to combine capital, policy direction and skills development.

That combination could become particularly important for Taraba, where the ability of young people to participate productively in the economy will have a direct bearing on the state’s future development.

The governor has reiterated that his administration regards young people as central to Taraba’s future and that their welfare remains among its priorities.

For the beneficiaries who received the first round of funding, the immediate responsibility now shifts from government to enterprise. The funds provide an opportunity, but turning that opportunity into sustainable businesses will require discipline, innovation, accountability and careful management.

As additional funding is injected into the programme, expectations will also rise. Young people across the state will be watching closely to see how subsequent phases are implemented, how beneficiaries are selected and how widely the opportunities are distributed.

The launch of the Kefas Youth Enterprise Fund therefore marks more than the beginning of another empowerment programme. It represents an attempt to build a structured pathway through which Taraba’s young population can gain access to capital, skills and opportunities — and ultimately become stronger contributors to the state’s economic future.

For Governor Agbu Kefas, the message is clear: investing in young people is not simply an expenditure; it is an investment in the future of Taraba State.
